Ingredients

  • 1 pound large shrimp peeled and deveined
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper optional, for a touch of heat
  • 2 large eggs lightly beaten
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh parsley
  • Vegetable oil or canola oil for frying

Equipment

  • Paper towels
  • Shallow dishes or bowls
  • Clean plate or baking sheet
  • Heavy-bottomed pot or deep skillet
  • Slotted spoon or spider strainer
  • Wire rack set over a baking sheet

Method

  1. Start by ensuring your shrimp are thoroughly peeled and deveined. Pat them completely dry with paper towels; this is crucial for achieving a truly crispy coating.
    1 pound large shrimp
  2. Prepare three shallow dishes or bowls. In the first, combine the all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using). Mix well. In the second dish, place the lightly beaten eggs. In the third, combine the panko breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, and chopped fresh parsley. Stir thoroughly to ensure the cheese and parsley are evenly distributed throughout the panko.
1/2 cup all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, 2 large eggs, 1 cup panko breadcrumbs, 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese, 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh parsley
  3. Working in batches, take each dried shrimp and first dredge it in the seasoned flour mixture, ensuring it is lightly coated. Shake off any excess flour. Next, dip the floured shrimp into the beaten eggs, allowing any excess to drip back into the bowl. Finally, generously coat the egg-dipped shrimp with the panko-Parmesan mixture, pressing gently so the breadcrumbs adhere well. Place the coated shrimp on a clean plate or baking sheet, ensuring they are not overlapping.
1 pound large shrimp, 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, 2 large eggs, 1 cup panko breadcrumbs, 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese, 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh parsley
  4. Pour about 2 inches of vegetable or canola oil into a heavy-bottomed pot or deep skillet. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil temperature by dropping a small piece of breadcrumb into it; it should sizzle immediately and turn golden brown within a minute.

  5. Carefully add the coated shrimp to the hot oil, working in batches to avoid overcrowding the pot. Overcrowding will lower the oil temperature and result in greasy poppers. Fry the shrimp for 2-3 minutes per side, or until they are golden brown and crispy, and the shrimp is cooked through. Use a slotted spoon or spider strainer to remove the fried shrimp from the oil.

  6. Place the fried shrimp poppers on a wire rack set over a baking sheet to drain any excess oil. This helps maintain their crispiness. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauces.

Notes

Properly storing and reheating your delicious Shrimp Poppers Recipe will ensure you can enjoy them even after they've cooled.
Storage:
Refrigeration: Once completely cooled, store leftover shrimp poppers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will stay fresh for up to 2-3 days. It's best to place a paper towel in the bottom of the container to absorb any residual moisture, which can help maintain crispiness.
Freezing: For longer storage, you can freeze your shrimp poppers. Arrange them in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and freeze until solid. Once frozen, transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container. They can be stored in the freezer for up to 1-2 months.
Reheating:
Oven/Toaster Oven (Recommended for Crispiness): To achieve the best crispiness, reheat in a preheated oven or toaster oven at around 375°F (190°C) for 5-10 minutes, or until heated through and crispy again.
Air Fryer: If you have an air fryer, this is another excellent method for reheating. Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for about 4-6 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through.
Microwave (Not Recommended for Crispiness): While the microwave will heat them through, it will likely result in a softer texture. If you must use the microwave, heat in short intervals until warm.
