Course: Breakfast

Ingredients

  • 1 pound breakfast sausage, crumbled and browned
  • 1 loaf (1 pound) white bread, cubed into 1-inch pieces If very fresh, can be lightly toasted.
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk whole or 2% recommended
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Pinch cayenne pepper optional, for a little heat

Equipment

  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Large bowl
  • Spatula
  • Oven-safe dish

Method

  1. In a lightly greased 9x13 inch baking dish, spread the cubed white bread evenly. If your bread is very fresh, you can lightly toast it in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes to prevent it from becoming too soggy, though this is optional.

  2. Sprinkle the crumbled and browned breakfast sausage over the bread cubes. Then, evenly distribute the shredded cheddar cheese, chopped yellow onion, and chopped green bell pepper over the sausage and bread.

  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the 6 large eggs, 2 cups of milk, 1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper. For an extra kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper. Ensure the Dijon mustard is fully incorporated.

  4. Pour the egg and milk mixture evenly over the ingredients in the baking dish. Gently press down on the bread cubes with a spatula or the back of a spoon to ensure they are mostly submerged in the custard. This helps them absorb the liquid and create a delightful texture.
  5. Cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap or foil. For the best texture and flavor infusion, refrigerate the casserole for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight. This soaking time is crucial for the bread to absorb the custard, resulting in a tender, cohesive casserole.
  6. When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Bake the casserole for 45-60 minutes, or until the top is golden brown, the center is set (an inserted knife should come out clean), and it’s puffed up around the edges. The exact baking time may vary depending on your oven.
  8. Allow the Ultimate Savory Breakfast Sausage Casserole to rest for about 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving. This resting period allows the casserole to set further, making it easier to cut into neat portions and ensuring the flavors meld beautifully.
