Ingredients

  • 6 cups Lucky Charms cereal
  • 10 oz marshmallows about 40 regular-sized marshmallows
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract optional, but recommended
  • Food coloring optional, for vibrant marshmallow swirls

Equipment

  • 8x8 inch baking pan
  • Large microwave-safe bowl or saucepan
  • Spatula or large spoon
  • Butter knife or pizza cutter

Method

  1. Lightly grease an 8x8 inch baking pan with butter or cooking spray, or line it with parchment paper for easy removal. Set aside.
    4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  2. In a large microwave-safe bowl or a saucepan over low heat, melt the 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter. If using a saucepan, stir constantly to prevent burning.
    4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  3. Add the 10 oz of marshmallows to the melted butter. Continue to stir over low heat (or microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between) until the marshmallows are completely melted and smooth. Be patient, and don't rush this step, as overheating can make the treats tough.

  4. If using, stir in the 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract until well combined. If you desire vibrant colors, divide the melted marshmallow mixture into smaller bowls and stir in a few drops of food coloring into each bowl to achieve your desired shades. You can swirl them together for a marbled effect or keep them separate.

  5. Gently pour the 6 cups of Lucky Charms cereal into the melted marshmallow mixture. Use a spatula or a large spoon to fold the cereal into the marshmallows until it's evenly coated. Work quickly but carefully to ensure the cereal doesn't get soggy.

  6. Transfer the Lucky Charms and marshmallow mixture into your prepared baking pan. Using a buttered spatula or your hands (lightly greased with butter or cooking spray), gently press the mixture evenly into the pan. Avoid compacting it too tightly, as this can make the treats hard.

  7. Allow the Lucky Charms marshmallow treats to cool and set at room temperature for at least 30 minutes, or until firm.
  8. Once set, carefully remove the treats from the pan (if using parchment paper) and cut them into squares using a sharp knife or a pizza cutter. Enjoy your homemade Lucky Charms marshmallow treats!
