Method
- In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth and creamy.8 oz cream cheese, softened
- Add the granulated sugar and vanilla extract to the cream cheese. Beat until well combined and the sugar is fully incorporated.8 oz cream cheese, softened, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Stir in the egg yolk until just combined.8 oz cream cheese, softened, 1 large egg yolk
- Lightly flour a clean work surface. Unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet.1 sheet puff pastry, thawed according to package directions
- Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter (around 3-4 inches wide is ideal), cut out as many hearts as possible from the puff pastry. Gently re-roll any scraps once and cut out additional hearts.1 sheet puff pastry, thawed according to package directions
- Place the puff pastry hearts on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving a little space between each one.1 sheet puff pastry, thawed according to package directions
- Using a smaller heart-shaped cookie cutter or a sharp knife, lightly score a border about 1/2 inch from the edge of each pastry heart. Be careful not to cut all the way through the pastry.
- In the center of each pastry heart (within the scored border), spoon about 1/2 to 1 tablespoon of the strawberry jam or preserves.1/4 cup strawberry jam or preserves (or fresh, finely diced strawberries)
- Dollop a spoonful of the cream cheese mixture on top of the strawberry filling in each heart.8 oz cream cheese, softened, 1/4 cup strawberry jam or preserves (or fresh, finely diced strawberries)
- In a small cup, whisk together the tablespoon of milk and brush this "egg wash" lightly over the edges of the puff pastry hearts.1 tablespoon milk (for egg wash)
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the danishes for 18-20 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown and puffed up beautifully, and the filling is set.
- Let the danishes cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Once cooled, you can dust them with powdered sugar for a classic look, or garnish with fresh strawberries and a drizzle of glaze if desired.Optional: Powdered sugar for dusting, fresh strawberries for garnish, or a simple glaze made with powdered sugar and a splash of milk
