Ingredients

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed according to package directions
  • 1/4 cup strawberry jam or preserves (or fresh, finely diced strawberries) If using fresh strawberries, ensure they are finely diced and mixed with a little sugar.
  • 1 tablespoon milk (for egg wash)
  • Optional: Powdered sugar for dusting, fresh strawberries for garnish, or a simple glaze made with powdered sugar and a splash of milk

Equipment

  • Electric mixer
  • Whisk
  • Heart-shaped cookie cutter
  • Baking Sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Smaller heart-shaped cookie cutter or sharp knife
  • Small cup
  • Wire rack

Method

  1. In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth and creamy.
    8 oz cream cheese, softened
  2. Add the granulated sugar and vanilla extract to the cream cheese. Beat until well combined and the sugar is fully incorporated.
8 oz cream cheese, softened, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  3. Stir in the egg yolk until just combined.
8 oz cream cheese, softened, 1 large egg yolk
  4. Lightly flour a clean work surface. Unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet.
1 sheet puff pastry, thawed according to package directions
  5. Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter (around 3-4 inches wide is ideal), cut out as many hearts as possible from the puff pastry. Gently re-roll any scraps once and cut out additional hearts.
1 sheet puff pastry, thawed according to package directions
  6. Place the puff pastry hearts on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving a little space between each one.
1 sheet puff pastry, thawed according to package directions
  7. Using a smaller heart-shaped cookie cutter or a sharp knife, lightly score a border about 1/2 inch from the edge of each pastry heart. Be careful not to cut all the way through the pastry.
  8. In the center of each pastry heart (within the scored border), spoon about 1/2 to 1 tablespoon of the strawberry jam or preserves.
1/4 cup strawberry jam or preserves (or fresh, finely diced strawberries)
  9. Dollop a spoonful of the cream cheese mixture on top of the strawberry filling in each heart.
8 oz cream cheese, softened, 1/4 cup strawberry jam or preserves (or fresh, finely diced strawberries)
  10. In a small cup, whisk together the tablespoon of milk and brush this "egg wash" lightly over the edges of the puff pastry hearts.
1 tablespoon milk (for egg wash)
  11. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the danishes for 18-20 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown and puffed up beautifully, and the filling is set.
  12. Let the danishes cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Once cooled, you can dust them with powdered sugar for a classic look, or garnish with fresh strawberries and a drizzle of glaze if desired.
Optional: Powdered sugar for dusting, fresh strawberries for garnish, or a simple glaze made with powdered sugar and a splash of milk

Notes

Best enjoyed fresh. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Gently reheat at 300°F (150°C) for 5-7 minutes. Do not freeze.
