Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef 80/20 recommended for flavor
  • 1 large yellow onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 (15.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes undrained
  • 1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans drained and rinsed
  • 1 (15 ounce) can black beans drained and rinsed
  • 1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper optional, for a little heat
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon salt or to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper or to taste
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar optional, for a touch of sweetness to balance acidity
  • ½ cup beef broth or water if a thinner consistency is desired

Equipment

  • Large pot or Dutch oven
  • Spoon
  • Saucepan
  • Microwave-safe bowl
  • Airtight container
  • Freezer-safe containers or heavy-duty freezer bags

Method

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain off any excess grease. Add the chopped yellow onion to the pot and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and translucent, about 5-7 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic.
1 tablespoon olive oil, 1 pound ground beef, 1 large yellow onion, 2 cloves garlic
  2. Pour in the undrained diced tomatoes, drained and rinsed kidney beans, and drained and rinsed black beans. Add the tomato sauce. Stir in the chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper (if using), dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. If you prefer a touch of sweetness to balance the acidity of the tomatoes, stir in the brown sugar now.
1 (15.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes, 1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans, 1 (15 ounce) can black beans, 1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce, 2 tablespoons chili powder, 1 teaspoon cumin, ½ teaspoon smoked paprika, ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon dried oregano, ½ teaspoon salt, ¼ teaspoon black pepper, 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  3. Bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for at least 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to meld and deepen. If you prefer a thinner chili, stir in the beef broth or water during this simmering stage until you reach your desired consistency.
½ cup beef broth or water
  4. After simmering, taste the chili and adjust the seasonings as needed. You might want a little more salt, pepper, or even a pinch more chili powder for extra kick. Continue to simmer, uncovered, for a few more minutes if you want to thicken it further.
½ teaspoon salt, ¼ teaspoon black pepper, 2 tablespoons chili powder
  5. Your delicious Hot Dog Chili Recipe is ready to serve! Ladle it generously over hot dogs, baked potatoes, nachos, or enjoy it straight from the bowl. Garnish with your favorite toppings like shredded cheese, sour cream, chopped green onions, or extra diced onions.

Notes

Allow the Hot Dog Chili Recipe to cool completely before storing. Transfer the cooled chili to an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. For best results, reheat the chili in a saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until heated through. You may need to add a splash of water or beef broth if the chili has thickened too much during storage. Place a serving of chili in a microwave-safe bowl and heat on 50% power for 1-2 minutes, stirring halfway through, until hot. Once cooled, portion the chili into freezer-safe containers or heavy-duty freezer bags. Ensure the containers are sealed tightly to prevent freezer burn. Frozen chili will maintain its quality for up to 2-3 months. To reheat from frozen, thaw overnight in the refrigerator and then reheat as described above, or reheat directly from frozen on a lower power setting in the microwave.
