Ingredients

  • Little Debbie® Chocolate Snack Cakes (or similar rectangular chocolate cakes) 1 (10.5-ounce) package
  • Store-bought pound cake (or your favorite homemade pound cake, baked in a rectangular pan) 1 (9-inch)
  • White frosting (store-bought vanilla frosting works perfectly) 2 cups
  • Green food coloring
  • Brown food coloring
  • Black decorating icing or gel (for laces)
  • Red and yellow candies for decorative "flags" or team colors Optional
  • Chocolate syrup (alternative for brown color) Optional, if not using brown food coloring
  • Milk chocolate chips (alternative for brown color) Optional, if not using brown food coloring

Equipment

  • Serving platter or cake board
  • Medium Bowl
  • Small Bowl
  • Offset spatula (optional)

Method

  1. Take your store-bought pound cake and place it on your serving platter or cake board. You'll want it to be the main centerpiece for your football. If your pound cake has too sharp of edges, you can gently trim them to create a more rounded football shape, though this is optional as the frosting will help disguise it.

  2. Unwrap your Little Debbie® Chocolate Snack Cakes. Carefully cut one snack cake in half diagonally. These two triangles will form the pointed ends of your football. Arrange these pieces on top of the pound cake, with the straight edges meeting the sides of the pound cake and the pointed ends extending slightly past the cake. You might need to gently press them into place.

  3. In a medium bowl, place your 2 cups of white frosting. Add a few drops of green food coloring and mix until you achieve a vibrant “football field” green. Ensure the coloring is evenly distributed for a smooth finish. Frost the entire pound cake and the attached snack cake pieces with the green frosting, creating a smooth, even “field” for your football. Don't worry about perfection; a slightly rustic look is perfectly fine!

  4. Take a separate small bowl and add a tablespoon or two of the green frosting. Add a couple of drops of brown food coloring and mix until you get a light brown color. This will be your “football” color. If you don't have brown food coloring, you can also use a bit of chocolate syrup mixed with white frosting, or even melt some milk chocolate chips and mix with a small amount of frosting to achieve a color and texture similar to a football.

  5. Gently spread this light brown frosting mixture over the top surface of your snack cake pieces, making sure to cover them completely and create a football shape. You can use the back of a spoon or an offset spatula to smooth it out. The goal is to make the snack cake pieces look like the actual football itself, sitting on the green field.
  6. Open your black decorating icing or gel. Carefully pipe three short, straight lines across the top of your brown "football" to resemble the laces of an actual football. You can make them slightly curved if you prefer. This is the detail that really makes the Fun Game Day Football Cake Hack pop!

  7. If you have red and yellow candies, you can strategically place them around the base of the pound cake to represent team colors or decorative "flags." This adds an extra festive touch to your game day spread.
