Ingredients

Sloppy Joe Mixture
  • 2 lbs ground beef (85/15 recommended) or ground turkey
  • 1 cup yellow onion chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper chopped
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dry mustard
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 15 oz can tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar packed
For Serving
  • 6 hamburger buns or potato rolls
  • 1 slice of cheese (optional) Cheddar or American

Method

Instructions
  1. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain off any excess grease thoroughly.
  2. Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper to the skillet with the browned beef. Cook until the vegetables begin to soften, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Transfer the cooked meat and vegetable mixture to the basin of a 4 or 6-quart slow cooker.
  4. Stir in the garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, dry mustard, salt, pepper, tomato sauce, ketchup, and brown sugar until all ingredients are evenly combined with the meat.
  5. Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 6 to 8 hours, or on HIGH for 3 to 4 hours, allowing the flavors to meld.
  6. Before serving, stir the mixture well. For best flavor, let it simmer for 30 minutes after stirring. If desired, place cheese slices on buns and briefly broil or microwave to melt, then top with the Sloppy Joe mixture.

Notes

This recipe freezes exceptionally well! Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 months. For a tangier flavor, substitute 1/4 cup of the ketchup with ketchup seasoned with yellow mustard.
