Method
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Peel the large yellow onion. Slice the onion very thinly, aiming for rings that are no thicker than 1/8 inch. A mandoline slicer is ideal for achieving uniform thickness, but a sharp knife will also work. Gently separate the rings.1 large yellow onion
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. This is your savory dry coating.1/2 cup all-purpose flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- In a separate shallow dish or bowl, combine the grated Parmesan cheese and olive oil. Add the onion rings to the flour mixture and toss them gently to coat evenly. Shake off any excess flour.1 large yellow onion, 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, 1 tablespoon olive oil, 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- Next, transfer the floured onion rings to the Parmesan cheese mixture. Toss them carefully to ensure each ring is well coated with the cheesy oil. Press gently if needed to help the cheese adhere.1 large yellow onion, 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Carefully arrange the coated onion rings in a single layer on the prepared baking sheets. Ensure there is a little space between each ring to allow for air circulation and even crisping. Overcrowding will lead to steaming, not crisping.1 large yellow onion
- Bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the onion rings are golden brown and crispy. Keep a close eye on them as they can burn quickly due to the sugar in the onions and the Parmesan. You may want to flip them halfway through baking for maximum uniformity.
- Once baked, carefully remove the baking sheets from the oven. Let the Crispy Parmesan Onion Ring Chips cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes. They will continue to crisp up as they cool down. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce!
Notes
To store, allow to cool completely and place in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2-3 days. To reheat, bake at 300°F (150°C) for 5-7 minutes until crisp.
