Ingredients

  • 2 large apples Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji recommended
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon melted unsalted butter or coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar optional, for extra sweetness
For serving (optional)
  • Caramel sauce
  • whipped cream
  • vanilla ice cream
  • powdered sugar

Equipment

  • Air Fryer
  • Medium Bowl

Method

  1. Wash, core, and slice your apples into uniform fry-like shapes, about 1/2 inch thick. You can leave the skin on for extra fiber and texture, or peel them if you prefer. Ensure the slices are relatively even in thickness for consistent cooking.
    2 large apples
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. If you desire a touch more sweetness in the coating itself, add the brown sugar at this stage and mix well.
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  3. Add the prepared apple slices to the dry coating mixture. Toss gently until all apple pieces are evenly coated. Ensure each slice has a light dusting of the spice blend.
    2 large apples
  4. Drizzle the melted butter or coconut oil over the coated apple fries. Toss again gently to ensure each piece is lightly coated with the melted fat. This step is crucial for achieving that desirable crispy texture in the air fryer.
1 tablespoon melted unsalted butter or coconut oil
  5. If your air fryer requires preheating, set it to 375°F (190°C) for about 3-5 minutes. This ensures the apples begin cooking immediately, promoting crispiness.
  6. Place the coated apple fries in a single layer in your air fryer basket. Avoid overcrowding the basket, as this will steam the apples rather than crisp them. You may need to cook in batches depending on the size of your air fryer.
  7. Cook for 8-12 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through the cooking time (around 4-6 minutes). The exact time will vary depending on your air fryer model and the thickness of your apple slices.
  8. The apple fries are ready when they are tender when pierced with a fork yet still hold their shape, and the coating is golden brown and crispy.
  9. Carefully remove the Crispy Air Fryer Apple Fries from the air fryer basket. Serve them hot, as they are best enjoyed fresh.

Notes

Best enjoyed immediately. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days; they will soften. Reheat in toaster oven or air fryer at 300°F (150°C) for 3-5 minutes to recapture crispiness.
