Method
- Ensure your cream cheese is at room temperature before you begin. This will make it much easier to mix and ensure a smooth, lump-free cheeseball. If you're short on time, you can carefully unwrap the cream cheese and place it on a microwave-safe plate. Microwave in 10-second intervals until just softened, not melted.8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- In a medium mixing bowl, add the softened cream cheese, shredded sharp cheddar cheese, and sour cream. Use a sturdy spoon or a spatula to thoroughly combine these ingredients until they are well incorporated and no streaks of cream cheese remain.8 ounces cream cheese, softened, 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese, 1/4 cup sour cream
- Introduce the chopped fresh chives, dried dill weed, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper to the bowl. If you're adding chopped bacon for an extra layer of savory goodness, now is the time to fold it in.2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives, 1 tablespoon dried dill weed, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon onion powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, 1/4 cup chopped cooked bacon
- Continue mixing all the ingredients together until everything is evenly distributed and the mixture forms a cohesive mass. You want to ensure all the seasonings are distributed throughout the cheeseball so every bite is packed with flavor.
- Once mixed, cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap. Place the bowl in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. This chilling period is crucial as it allows the cheeseball mixture to firm up, making it much easier to shape and roll.
- After chilling, remove the mixture from the refrigerator. You can either shape it directly in the bowl or scoop it out onto a piece of plastic wrap. Using your hands, gently shape the mixture into a round ball. If the mixture is still a bit sticky, you can lightly dampen your hands with water or a little oil.
- Prepare a shallow plate or a wide, rimmed dish with additional shredded cheddar cheese. If desired, you can also mix in other toppings like finely chopped pecans, paprika, or a sprinkle of more fresh chives into the cheddar. Gently roll the shaped cheeseball in the topping mixture, ensuring it's evenly coated on all sides.1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- Once rolled, carefully transfer the Cheddar Ranch Cheeseball to a serving platter. Cover it loosely with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least another 15-30 minutes before serving. This allows the flavors to meld and ensures the cheeseball holds its shape beautifully. Serve with your favorite crackers, pretzels, breadsticks, or vegetable sticks.
Notes
This cheeseball is designed to be served cold or at room temperature, so reheating is generally not recommended as it can alter the texture.
