Ingredients

  • 1 cup rolled oats (gluten-free if needed)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup vanilla or birthday cake flavored protein powder (whey, casein, or plant-based)
  • 2 tablespoons almond butter (or peanut butter)
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1/4 cup sprinkles (Optional: for that extra birthday flair!)
  • 1-2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey (Optional: if a sweeter ball is desired)

Equipment

  • Medium-sized mixing bowl
  • Sturdy spoon or spatula
  • Airtight container

Method

  1. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, add the rolled oats, protein powder, chia seeds, cinnamon, and salt. Stir everything together until well combined. If you're using sprinkles, you can add them in now or reserve some for rolling later.
1 cup rolled oats, 1/4 cup vanilla or birthday cake flavored protein powder, 1 tablespoon chia seeds, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, 1 pinch salt, 1/4 cup sprinkles
  2. To the dry ingredients, add the unsweetened applesauce, almond butter, and vanilla extract. If your protein powder isn't very sweet, or if you prefer a sweeter treat, now is the time to add the maple syrup or honey.
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce, 2 tablespoons almond butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1-2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey
  3. Using a sturdy spoon or a spatula, mix all the ingredients until a thick, cohesive dough forms. It might seem a bit wet at first, but keep mixing; the oats and chia seeds will absorb the moisture. If the mixture seems too sticky to roll, you can add a tablespoon or two more oats. If it’s too dry, add a tiny splash more applesauce.
  4. For easier rolling, cover the bowl and refrigerate the mixture for about 15-20 minutes. This allows the ingredients to meld and the dough to firm up.
  5. Once the dough is firm enough to handle, take about tablespoon-sized portions and roll them between your palms to form uniform balls. If you reserved sprinkles, you can gently roll each ball in them for a festive finish.
    1/4 cup sprinkles
  6. Your Applesauce Birthday Cake Protein Balls are ready to be enjoyed immediately! Alternatively, transfer them to an airtight container for later.
