Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 3/4 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 tablespoons butter (for sauce)
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour (for sauce)
  • 3 cups milk (for sauce)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (for sauce)
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, optional (for sauce)
  • 1/2 cup sugar (for sauce)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  2. In another bowl, whisk eggs, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
  3. Pour wet ingredients into dry and whisk gently until combined. Do not overmix.
  4. Preheat waffle iron and cook batter according to manufacturer’s instructions until golden and fluffy.
  5. Repeat until all batter is used.
  6. For the sauce: In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
  7. Whisk in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  8. Slowly whisk in milk until smooth, then simmer 5-7 minutes until thickened.
  9. Stir in sugar, salt, and nutmeg if using.
  10. Serve waffles hot, generously topped with the white sauce.

Notes

For extra flavor, add a pinch of cinnamon to the waffle batter or top with fresh fruit alongside the white sauce.
