Description

Supremely soft, slightly sweet, and topped with cinnamon sugar—this Classic Amish Bread is a comforting homemade treat perfect for any time of day.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • ⅓ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, yeast, and 1 teaspoon of the sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add the remaining granulated sugar, vegetable oil, and salt. Stir to combine.
  3. Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing after each addition. Dough will be sticky.
  4. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough, knead briefly, and shape into a loaf. Place in a greased 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  7. Cover and let rise again for 30 minutes until nearly doubled.
  8. Meanwhile, melt butter and mix cinnamon with ¼ cup sugar.
  9. Brush risen loaf with melted butter and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.
  10. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30-35 minutes, until golden and a skewer comes out clean.
  11. Cool in pan 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For best texture, don’t over-knead. You can double the recipe to make two loaves and freeze one for later.
