Description

These Old Fashioned Southern Tea Cakes are soft, buttery, and lightly sweet with crisp edges. A true taste of Southern tradition, perfect for serving with tea, coffee, or milk.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy (3–5 minutes).
  2. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with milk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  5. Wrap dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  6. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  7. Roll out dough to ¼ inch thickness and cut into desired shapes.
  8. Place cookies on the baking sheet, leaving 1 inch between each. Bake for 8–10 minutes, until edges are lightly golden.
  9. Cool on baking sheet for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For the best results, use fresh flour and pure vanilla extract. Chilling the dough is essential to prevent spreading and ensure perfect texture.
