These Old Fashioned Southern Tea Cakes are soft, buttery, and lightly sweet with crisp edges. A true taste of Southern tradition, perfect for serving with tea, coffee, or milk.

- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 2 large eggs
- ¼ cup milk
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy (3–5 minutes).
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with milk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
- Wrap dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Roll out dough to ¼ inch thickness and cut into desired shapes.
- Place cookies on the baking sheet, leaving 1 inch between each. Bake for 8–10 minutes, until edges are lightly golden.
- Cool on baking sheet for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
For the best results, use fresh flour and pure vanilla extract. Chilling the dough is essential to prevent spreading and ensure perfect texture.
