Description

A comforting Hutterite Maultosche recipe featuring hearty meat-filled dumplings simmered in a flavorful broth, perfect for any time of year.


Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground beef
  • 1 large Onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 cup Breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup Milk
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1/4 tsp Ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp Ground allspice
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Wonton wrappers (about 40-50)
  • 8 cups Chicken broth or beef broth
  • 2 Carrots, sliced
  • 2 Celery stalks, diced
  • 1 Parsnip, diced (optional)
  • 1/2 cup Chopped fresh parsley
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, nutmeg, allspice, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
  2. Lay out a wonton wrapper, add a teaspoon of filling, moisten edges with water, fold into a triangle or rectangle, and seal tightly. Repeat until all dumplings are made.
  3. In a large pot, heat chicken or beef broth. Add carrots, celery, and parsnip (if using). Bring to a gentle simmer.
  4. Drop dumplings into simmering broth in batches. Cook 8-10 minutes, until dumplings float and filling is fully cooked.
  5. Season soup with salt and pepper. Stir in fresh parsley. Serve hot, garnished with extra parsley if desired.

Notes

Making dumplings takes time, but the rich flavors are worth it. Ensure dumplings are sealed well to prevent filling from escaping during cooking.
