Description
Delicious Hutterite Kartoffel Knödel (potato dumplings), a hearty and comforting dish with fluffy potato dough flavored with nutmeg and pepper. Perfect for family meals or special occasions.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3 lbs Russet Potatoes
- 1 cup All-Purpose Flour
- 1 large Egg
- 1/4 teaspoon Ground Nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon Salt
- 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper
- Optional: Breadcrumbs for coating
- Optional: Butter for browning
Instructions
- Wash the potatoes and place them in a large pot. Cover with cold water, bring to a boil, and cook until tender (20–25 minutes).
- Drain, let cool slightly, peel, and mash the potatoes thoroughly until smooth.
- In a mixing bowl, combine mashed potatoes, flour, egg, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Mix into a slightly sticky dough.
- On a floured surface, roll the dough into a log and cut into 1-inch slices. Roll each slice into round dumplings.
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a gentle simmer. Drop in dumplings in batches without overcrowding.
- Simmer 10–15 minutes until dumplings float to the surface and are cooked through.
- (Optional) Melt butter in a skillet and brown dumplings on all sides for extra flavor.
- Serve hot, garnished with parsley or chives.
Notes
For best results, use starchy Russet potatoes. Do not overmix the dough to keep dumplings light and fluffy.
