Description

This Applesauce Substitute Amish Bread is a healthier, oil-free take on the classic comfort recipe, swapping applesauce for Greek yogurt while keeping all the cozy, sweet flavor you love.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt (as applesauce substitute)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Optional: cinnamon-sugar mixture, chopped nuts, oats

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×5 inch loaf pan or line with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together egg, milk, Greek yogurt, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Pour batter into prepared pan and spread evenly.
  6. Sprinkle optional toppings like cinnamon-sugar, oats, or nuts, if desired.
  7. Bake for 55-60 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the center comes out clean. Tent with foil if browning too quickly.
  8. Cool in pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

Store tightly wrapped at room temperature for up to 3 days, refrigerate up to a week, or freeze for 2-3 months. Reheat by toasting or baking covered in foil at 350°F for 10-15 minutes.
