Description

A delightfully soft and fluffy Amish White Bread, rooted in tradition and perfect for sandwiches, toast, or enjoying warm with butter.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups Warm Milk (105-115°F)
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons (1 packet) Active Dry Yeast
  • ¼ cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • ¼ cup Vegetable Oil (or melted butter)
  • 4 cups All-Purpose Flour, plus more for dusting
  • 2 tablespoons Melted Butter (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Stir gently and let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add vegetable oil and salt to the mixture. Stir well.
  3. Gradually add flour, one cup at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  4. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add flour as needed if sticky.
  5. Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl. Turn to coat. Cover and let rise in a warm spot for 1–2 hours until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and turn onto a floured surface. Divide in half and shape each into a loaf.
  7. Grease two 9×5 inch loaf pans. Place dough seam-side down into pans. Cover and let rise for 30–45 minutes until nearly doubled.
  8. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush tops with melted butter.
  9. Bake 30–35 minutes, until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped. Tent with foil if browning too fast.
  10. Let cool in pans 10 minutes, then transfer to wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

Perfect served with jam, butter, or used in sandwiches. Great paired with soups like tomato or chicken noodle.
