- 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
- 1 cup shortening
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 cups packed brown sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 2 teaspoons hot water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 4 1/2 cups rolled oats (old-fashioned)
- 1 1/2 cups peanut butter (creamy or crunchy)
- 2 cups chocolate chips
- 1 cup M&Ms (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and shortening until fluffy. Add sugars and beat for 2-3 minutes.
- Beat in eggs one at a time. Stir in vanilla extract.
- In a small bowl, dissolve baking soda in hot water and add to the mixture.
- In a separate bowl, whisk flour and salt together.
- Gradually mix dry ingredients into wet ingredients until just combined.
- Stir in oats, peanut butter, and chocolate chips. Fold in M&Ms if using.
- Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto baking sheets, spacing about 2 inches apart.
- Bake 10-12 minutes, until edges are golden and centers are set.
- Cool on sheets for a few minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
