Description

A golden, flaky hand pie traditionally enjoyed by the Amish community – filled with sweet fruit and finished with a sugary glaze, perfect for on-the-go snacking or a cozy dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 cup cold butter or lard
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • Fruit pie filling (apple, cherry, blueberry, or peach)
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 23 tablespoons milk

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, and baking powder.
  2. Cut in butter or lard until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat eggs and mix with milk. Add to flour mixture and stir until just combined.
  4. Knead dough gently on a floured surface until smooth. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate 30 minutes.
  5. Heat 2–3 inches of oil in a heavy-bottomed skillet or pot to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with paper towels.
  6. Roll out chilled dough to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut into 5-6 inch circles.
  7. Place 2 tablespoons of fruit filling in the center of each circle. Fold and seal edges with a fork.
  8. Fry pies 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
  9. Whisk powdered sugar and milk to make glaze. Drizzle or brush over warm pies.

Notes

Use homemade or store-bought fruit filling. Ensure the edges are well sealed to avoid leaks during frying. Glaze while pies are still warm for best results.
