Description
A golden, flaky hand pie traditionally enjoyed by the Amish community – filled with sweet fruit and finished with a sugary glaze, perfect for on-the-go snacking or a cozy dessert.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 cup cold butter or lard
- 2 large eggs
- 3/4 cup milk
- Fruit pie filling (apple, cherry, blueberry, or peach)
- Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2–3 tablespoons milk
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, and baking powder.
- Cut in butter or lard until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- In a separate bowl, beat eggs and mix with milk. Add to flour mixture and stir until just combined.
- Knead dough gently on a floured surface until smooth. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate 30 minutes.
- Heat 2–3 inches of oil in a heavy-bottomed skillet or pot to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with paper towels.
- Roll out chilled dough to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut into 5-6 inch circles.
- Place 2 tablespoons of fruit filling in the center of each circle. Fold and seal edges with a fork.
- Fry pies 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
- Whisk powdered sugar and milk to make glaze. Drizzle or brush over warm pies.
Notes
Use homemade or store-bought fruit filling. Ensure the edges are well sealed to avoid leaks during frying. Glaze while pies are still warm for best results.
