Description

Craving a quick and easy baked treat? These Amish bread scones are buttery, slightly sweet, and filled with old-fashioned charm. Ready in under 30 minutes, they’re a comforting twist on a classic breakfast favorite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk (or milk with 1 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional: Cinnamon sugar for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add cubed cold butter and cut into the dry mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix buttermilk and vanilla extract.
  5. Pour wet ingredients into the dry and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. On a floured surface, pat dough into a 1-inch thick circle. Cut into 8 wedges.
  7. Place scones on baking sheet. Optional: brush tops with milk or cream and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.
  8. Bake for 15–18 minutes, until golden brown and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  9. Cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet, then transfer to a wire rack. Enjoy warm!

Notes

For best results, use very cold butter. Don’t overmix the dough to keep scones soft and tender. Customize with add-ins like chocolate chips, dried fruit, or nuts.
