- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
- 3/4 cup buttermilk (or milk with 1 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Optional: Cinnamon sugar for topping
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add cubed cold butter and cut into the dry mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- In a separate bowl, mix buttermilk and vanilla extract.
- Pour wet ingredients into the dry and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
- On a floured surface, pat dough into a 1-inch thick circle. Cut into 8 wedges.
- Place scones on baking sheet. Optional: brush tops with milk or cream and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.
- Bake for 15–18 minutes, until golden brown and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- Cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet, then transfer to a wire rack. Enjoy warm!
Notes
For best results, use very cold butter. Don’t overmix the dough to keep scones soft and tender. Customize with add-ins like chocolate chips, dried fruit, or nuts.
